2008 Robert Kumpe Scholarship Winners Announced

The Northwest Ohio Youth Soccer League is pleased to announce the 2008 Robert Kumpe Memorial Scholarship winners.

 

Bryan Bosch, is a second year recipient of the Kumpe Scholarship. This year he was awarded a $1,500 scholarship.  Bryan, son of Neal and Lori, currently attends the University of Cincinnati, where he is majoring in Civil Engineering.   As a student at Maumee High School, Bryan was a member of the Varsity Soccer Team, the JETS program, the National Honor Society, Chemistry Club, and TEAMS.  Through various community service efforts, Bryan helped with the NWO Festival Tournament, volunteered with blood drives, was a school levy volunteer, a STAMP guest speaker, mentored younger students, and served as a basketball and soccer coach to the youth in the local area.  Being a 2007 National Merit Commended Scholar, Captain of the MHS soccer team, and receiving the NLL All-Academic Team honors, are several of Bryan’s accomplishments over the years.  Bryan participated in the NWOYSL by playing in the Maumee Express Club and serving as referee for many soccer games.

 

Stephanie Filar, a senior at Central Catholic High School, plans to major in Mechanical Engineering at Case Western University in the fall.  Stephanie, the daughter of Ken and Debbie, played soccer at Central Catholic H.S. as well as for the ESSL and Swiss Baysiders clubs.  Over the past four years, Stephanie has participated in the National Honor Society, Spiritual Commission, Student Government and the Fellowship of Irish Christian Athletes, and is a certified soccer referee.  Her volunteer work includes coaching youth soccer and volunteering at St. Ignatius Parish.  Stephanie received All League and All Ohio Academic Honors for soccer.  The daughter of Ken and Debbie, Stephanie is the recipient of a $2,000 scholarship.

 

Zachary Maiden, senior at Whitmer High School, is the winner of a $2,000 scholarship.  The son of Tony and Michelle, Zachary plans to attend either Ohio State University or the University of Toledo in the fall.  Zachary was a captain on the varsity soccer, and a member of the Football and Bowling teams.  He is also a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Club, and the Athens Missionary Baptist Church Youth Group where he supervises church activities.  Zachary’s honors include Team MVP for soccer, First Team All-City, First Team All-District, and First Team All-Blade for football.  He was a member of the Washington Local/Glass City Soccer Clubs where he participated in the NWOYSL.

 

Alyssa Niese, daughter of Dean and Cathy is the recipient of a $3,000 award.  Alyssa, a senior at St. Ursula Academy, earned a three-year varsity letter in soccer, and a one year varsity letter in basketball.  Alyssa is a member of the National Honor Society, Zonta Club, Campus Core Ministry, St. Joan of Arc high school CYO basketball team, Pacesetter Soccer GU18 team, and is a Eucharistic Minister.  Over the past four years, Alyssa has volunteered for the NWOYSL and Festival Tournament, Owens Community College, Positive Awareness Retreat, as well as volunteered as a coach for several youth soccer and basketball teams. Receiving First Team Honors in the NWOHSSL, and second team honors in the NWOSSCA, as well as receiving All Academic Honors in both, are among Alyssa’s honorary accomplishments.  While playing in the NWOYSL, Alyssa played for the Maumee Express Soccer Club.  Alyssa will be attending the University of Toledo in the fall, where she will major in Business.  She will continue her soccer career by playing on the Lady Rockets Soccer Team.

 

Kaitlyn Sarmento, daughter of Mark and Kim, is a senior at Northview High School.  “Wrap up Toledo”, the Sylvania Youth Soccer Association, Northview High School, the Jamie Farr Golf Tournament, and the Northwest Ohio Festival Tournament and League are all recipients of Kaitlyn’s volunteering efforts.  While at Northview H.S., Kaitlyn was a member of the Varsity Soccer squad, the Bowling Team, Spanish Club, Art Club, Interact Club, and Young Life.  She received the Lady Kat Award for soccer and was on the NLL All-Academic Team. Within the League, Kaitlyn played soccer for the Sylvania United Soccer Club, as well as the Maumee Express Soccer Club, and for the Pacesetter Soccer Club in the State and MR Leagues.  Serving as a recreational league referee and an assistant assignor for SYSA are among Kaitlyn’s additional soccer endeavors.  In the fall, Kaitlyn will be attending the University of Cincinnati where she will major in Civil Engineering.  Kaitlyn is the recipient of a $1,500 scholarship.
